Where to Stay for the Sepang Grand Prix
Formula 1 returns to Sepang International Circuit on 2–4 October 2026, and the accommodation question is more interesting than it looks. Sepang is not in Kuala Lumpur. The circuit sits on Jalan Pekeliling in 64000 KLIA — next door to Kuala Lumpur International Airport, roughly 45 minutes to an hour from the city centre by road. "A hotel near the circuit" and "a hotel near the airport" are, in practice, the same sentence.
That single fact decides the whole trip. Below are the realistic options by tier, the trade-off between staying out by the track and staying in the city, and what is still unconfirmed at the time of writing.
Closest to the Track: The Airport Hotels
These are the shortest transfers on race morning, and the first to sell out.
- Sama-Sama Hotel KLIA — adjacent to the main terminal and about 10 minutes from the circuit. The premium choice if you want a short, predictable run to the gates.
- Mövenpick Hotel & Convention Centre KLIA — roughly 7 km out, about 10–15 minutes away, with a resort-style pool and gym.
- Tune Hotel KLIA2 — the budget end. Simple rooms, basic amenities, around 15 minutes from Sepang.
The advantage is obvious on a Sunday when the circuit exit road is full: you are past the traffic in a quarter of an hour. The disadvantage is equally obvious. The airport zone is a transit district, not a night out — dinner options thin out quickly once you leave the terminal complexes.
The Resort Option
Avani Sepang Goldcoast Resort sits about 30 minutes from the circuit on the coast, with over-water villas facing the Straits of Malacca. It is the one option on this list that works as a holiday in its own right rather than a base for a race weekend, and it suits anyone bringing family who have no intention of sitting through three days of practice and qualifying.
Mid-Range Inland: Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Nilai and Dengkil
The corridor north and east of the airport is where the value sits. Drive times run from roughly 20 minutes to a little over half an hour depending on exactly where you land, and the areas have proper restaurants and shopping — which the airport strip does not.
- Cyberview Resort & Spa, Cyberjaya — landscaped grounds, pools and a spa; Cyberjaya to Sepang is around 30 minutes by car.
- COOP Hotel Putrajaya & Cyberjaya, in Dengkil — roughly 22 km from the circuit.
- Swing & Pillows Dataran Nilai, Nilai — straightforward budget rooms in a town with plenty of local food.
- Salak Tinggi — a small town with modest hotels, worth knowing about because it has its own rail station (see below).
Distances quoted are approximate and measured by road; treat every one of them as longer on race day.
Or Stay in Kuala Lumpur and Commute
Plenty of visiting fans do exactly this, and the circuit's own guidance lists city hotels alongside the airport ones. Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, Traders Hotel, The Majestic, Hilton Kuala Lumpur and Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral all sit about 45 minutes to an hour from Sepang by car.
The trade-off is straightforward. You get a real city — food, bars, the towers, somewhere to be on Friday night — and you pay for it with two commutes a day, in tropical heat, on roads carrying a grand prix crowd. If you are attending all three days, that adds up. If you are coming for Sunday alone and want a holiday around it, the city wins comfortably.
One planning note in the city's favour: Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral sits on top of KL Sentral, which is where the airport rail line begins.
Getting to the Gates
By rail. The Express Rail Link runs from KL Sentral toward the airport and stops at Salak Tinggi, the station closest to the circuit. From there it is a 15–20 minute Grab or taxi to the gates. This is the most traffic-proof way in from the city, and the reason a Salak Tinggi or KL Sentral base is more useful than a map alone suggests.
By shuttle. Sepang runs event shuttle buses on major race weekends. For MotoGP the service links KLCC, Pasar Seni and KLIA2 to the circuit, generally at about 30-minute intervals during peak hours. Expect something comparable for the grand prix.
By car. Access is via the ELITE and KLIA expressways to signed gates, with paid event parking on site. Leave far more margin than the map suggests, in both directions.
The caveat: the official transport plan, shuttle routes and parking arrangements for the October grand prix have not been published yet, and neither have tickets. The pattern above is drawn from how Sepang runs its MotoGP weekends. Confirm against the circuit's official channels once the race-weekend information is released.
Book Earlier Than You Think
Two things make this weekend tighter than a normal Sepang event. First, the race was confirmed only in late July for early October — a little over two months of notice, against the six to nine months a grand prix host city normally gets. Second, the Singapore Grand Prix follows on 11 October, one week later, so a slice of the regional travelling audience is planning both trips at once and moving through the same airports.
Practical advice: book a refundable rate now rather than a cheaper non-refundable one later. Airport-adjacent rooms will go first, city rooms will hold longest, and the inland corridor is where late bookers will still find something sensible.
