Norris Targets Championship Gap
Following a dominant victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, McLaren driver Lando Norris has signaled his intent to challenge for the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. Norris currently sits fifth in the standings, trailing championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 91 points with 11 races remaining in the season.
Norris, who secured his first win of the year in Budapest, believes the momentum has shifted. "The pressure is on him [Antonelli] for sure," Norris stated. "There's no pressure on me. I've been feeling very confident." The British driver noted that while Mercedes has been prone to team errors, McLaren’s recent performance—bolstered by a significant floor upgrade—has brought them back into contention.

The Hungarian race was not without internal friction. Norris expressed frustration during the event regarding pit stop priority while running behind teammate Oscar Piastri. Despite the radio tension, Norris emphasized that his primary goal remains team success while maximizing his own pace. Team principal Andrea Stella acknowledged the ongoing "race of upgrades," noting that the team that can consistently add performance over the final 11 rounds will likely dictate the championship outcome.
Looking Ahead
Norris remains cautious about the road ahead, admitting that the car's performance in Hungary may not be replicated at every circuit. He credited his recent form to intensive work with his engineering team to better understand the car's handling limits. The 2026 season will resume following the summer break with the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for August 21-23.
