F1 confirms European contingency for 2026 season finale
Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that the 2026 season will conclude in Europe should the final two scheduled rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi be relocated. The decision follows ongoing instability in the Middle East, which has already forced the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix.
While the Qatar (November 27-29) and Abu Dhabi (December 4-6) events remain on the calendar for now, F1 has set a mid-September deadline to determine if they can proceed. Domenicali noted that the sport is monitoring the situation closely and is in communication with other international championships, such as the WEC, which has already opted to remain in Europe for its year-end schedule.
Logistical challenges and potential replacements
Domenicali cited "Brexit-connected documentation" as a primary reason for limiting potential replacement venues to Europe. While the historic Imola circuit has been identified as a potential candidate, the F1 president emphasized that no replacement has been finalized. The sport remains committed to maintaining as close to the original 24-round schedule as possible, though the calendar currently stands at 23 races following the loss of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Addressing concerns regarding late-season weather in Europe, Domenicali argued that temperatures in the region during late November and early December are statistically comparable to, or warmer than, those experienced during the Las Vegas Grand Prix. He also confirmed that a second race in Las Vegas was considered but ultimately rejected to avoid competing with the NFL schedule and to protect the value of the existing event.
Impact on the championship battle
Any further adjustments to the calendar could prove pivotal for the 2026 title fight. Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli currently leads the standings with a 50-point advantage over Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. With 12 rounds remaining, the stability of the final race locations remains a critical factor for the championship outcome.
The 2026 season is set to resume following the summer break with a Sprint weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for August 21-23.
