Major Expansion to 10 Sprint Weekends
Formula 1 has officially confirmed its 2027 world championship schedule, maintaining a 24-race calendar while expanding the Sprint format to a record 10 events. The season begins under the floodlights at the Bahrain International Circuit on March 12-14, which will host the opening round as a Sprint weekend immediately following four days of pre-season testing from February 24-27.
The expansion significantly intensifies the competitive stakes across the year. Portimao and Istanbul Park Return as Zandvoort Departs
The 2027 itinerary brings major structural changes to the European leg:
- Returning Venues: Portugal's Portimão circuit rejoins the schedule in mid-June, while Turkey's Istanbul Park returns as part of an autumn triple-header alongside Azerbaijan and Singapore.
- Rotational System and Departures: The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort has dropped off the calendar. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya enters a biennial rotation with Spa-Francorchamps, with the Belgian Grand Prix taking the 2027 slot and Barcelona scheduled to return in 2028. A new Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid will debut in mid-September following the Italian round at Monza.
A Demanding Campaign Through December
The championship layout introduces significant logistical demands on teams, running through consecutive flyaway blocks and culminating in back-to-back Sprint weekends in Qatar and Abu Dhabi on December 10-12. Las Vegas remains the only Grand Prix on the schedule with a Saturday main race.
