A 24-Race Slate Heavy on Sprint Formats
Formula 1 has unveiled its 2027 calendar, maintaining a 24-race schedule while radically ramping up competitive pressure across race weekends. The sport has expanded its Sprint format from six rounds to 10, bringing the condensed 100km race and its standalone qualifying session to several traditional venues, headlined by the Circuit de Monaco.
F1 data indicates that Sprint weekends deliver a 12 per cent jump in global television viewership over traditional three-practice formats. The 10 selected Sprint circuits are split evenly between established sprint hosts—Montreal, Silverstone, Monza, Interlagos, and Qatar's Lusail—and five new additions: Sakhir, Albert Park, Suzuka, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit. Points will continue to be awarded to the top-eight finishers in the Saturday event.
The Logic Behind a Monaco Sprint
Monaco’s inclusion has drawn immediate scrutiny given the track’s narrow layout and the near-impossibility of on-track passing under dry conditions. However, the commercial and strategic calculus focuses on qualifying. A single lap around the Principality requires the surgical precision of butchering a high-grade cut under extreme heat—every millimetre against the barrier matters, and any lapse ruins the entire service.
By introducing a Sprint, Monaco will feature two distinct qualifying sessions: Sprint Qualifying on Friday and Grand Prix Qualifying on Saturday. With only one 60-minute practice session on Friday to dial in suspension travel and tire window before competitive running begins, teams will face far narrower setup margins, increasing the likelihood of an upset grid.
Bahrain Opener, Abu Dhabi Finale, and Middle East Schedule
For the first time, Formula 1 will bookend its championship with Sprint rounds:
- Season Opener: Bahrain stages the first Sprint weekend on March 12-14, preceded by an extended four-day pre-season test at the Sakhir circuit from February 24-27.
- Season Finale: The campaign concludes with consecutive Sprints in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, ending on December 12—raising the prospect of a championship decided on a Saturday.
Four Middle Eastern rounds feature on the 2027 calendar. Meanwhile, F1 continues to monitor the regional situation regarding the final 2026 rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, where Imola remains the designated contingency circuit if replacements are required.
Venue Changes: Portimao and Istanbul Return
The 2027 grid will see familiar European circuits cycle back into the championship rotation:
- Portugal (Portimao): Replaces the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in June, as Barcelona begins a biennial rotation with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
- Turkey (Istanbul Park): Returns to the calendar in early October following an extended five-week summer break.
- Departures: The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort drops off the schedule following the expiration of its promotional contract.
