Ferrari Introduces Second Engine Upgrade for Monza
Lewis Hamilton believes Ferrari have the machinery to contend for victory at the Italian Grand Prix after the team confirmed a planned power unit upgrade for both drivers ahead of their home race at Monza.
The update marks Ferrari's second internal combustion engine upgrade of the 2026 season under the FIA's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) framework. The regulation allows power unit manufacturers that lag more than four percent behind benchmark supplier Red Bull to introduce extra performance updates. Ferrari brought their first ADUO upgrade to the Austrian Grand Prix in June, and this second step places both Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc onto their fourth power units of the season—the final allocation before incurring grid penalties.
Hamilton and Ferrari Look to Capitalize on Title Opening
Hamilton enters Monza trailing championship leader Kimi Antonelli by 59 points, but the dynamics of the Italian Grand Prix weekend present a major tactical window. Antonelli faces a back-of-the-grid start due to an engine penalty, leaving the fight at the front wide open for Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull.
"Last year we didn't have the car to fight. I think this year we have the car to fight," Hamilton said during an appearance in Milan ahead of the race weekend. "Barcelona was amazing, the support from everybody. But I hope this weekend we can fight for the win."
Hamilton, who shares the record of five Monza victories with Michael Schumacher, took his maiden Ferrari victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in June. Ferrari finished fourth and sixth at Monza last season, but team principal Frederic Vasseur emphasized that marginal gains will dictate whether the Scuderia can deliver in front of the home crowd.
"It represents a step in the right direction and as we know this year is very much about marginal gains," Vasseur said. "Monza is a demanding circuit and the field is extremely close, and our priority will be to execute every aspect of the weekend as well as possible, from Friday onwards."
